No More Surgery For Russian Olympic Skier Maria Komissarova

Doctors won't continue to operate on Russian freestyle ski cross racer Maria Komissarova, who has undergone two operations since she broke her back while training in Sochi on Saturday.

Komissarova, 23, suffered a fractured vertebrae with a dislocation at the PSX Olympic ski cross venue at Rosa Khutor and underwent a 6 ½ hour operation on Sunday.

President Vladimir Putin visited Komissarova to wish her a speedy recovery before she was transferred to Munich, Germany, for a second operation on Monday.

On Wednesday, following a consultation between local doctors and medical officials flown in from Russia, it was decided that a third surgery will not be necessary, said Mirzali Samedov, head of the Russian Freestyle Federation's medical department, Interfax reported.

Komissarova, whose condition has been described as grave but stable, will continue her rehabilitation at a local medical center, Samedov said.

Komissarova, who won second place at a World Cup event in 2012, was not expected to be a medal contender in the Sochi Olympics.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
