The city of Yekaterinburg has banned large public events held in enclosed rooms in response to an outbreak of measles.
The event ban is one of several measures implemented by the Russian consumer safety watchdog Rospotrebnadzor in the city to combat the outbreak, the Kommersant newspaper reported Wednesday.
Other measures forbid unvaccinated children and teachers, as well as individuals who have not fully recovered from the disease, from entering schools.
Since Nov. 30, there have been 60 suspected cases of measles in the city. Of those, 28 cases – 20 among children and eight among adults – have have been scientifically confirmed.
Infections occurred in 11 of Yekaterinburg's educational institutions and nine hospitals. A partial quarantine was declared in the Ural State Medical University on Nov. 24, when one of its students fell ill with the disease. Since the outbreak, local authorities have been working to rapidly vaccinate residents.
Rospotrebnadzor said that the restrictive measures will stay in place "until further notice."
