U.S. Accuses Russia of Bombing Hospital in Syria

Syrian Civil defense members try to put out a fire at a site after airstrikes.

Russian missiles were responsible for hitting the hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders in Syria, U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a news briefing, The TASS news agency reported Tuesday.

“We have called these attacks on civilian objects unacceptable. We are confident that Russia has carried out these attacks,” Toner was quoted by TASS as saying.

On Monday, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the agency was unaware of who was responsible for air strikes on the hospital, TASS reported.

Meanwhile, Syria's ambassador to Russia Riad Haddad said in the interview that the air attack was conducted by the U.S.-led coalition, the Kommersant newspaper reported.

On Feb. 15, the air strikes hit the temporary hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders in the Syrian province of Idlib. According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes, which killed nine people, were carried out by Russian forces.

The Kremlin denied the allegations.

“We categorically reject such accusations, especially as each time those who make such statements are unable to somehow prove these groundless allegations,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, TASS reported.
