The future is here, and it’s less than 4,000 kilometers east of Moscow.
A Siberian ruling United Party official reportedly plans to volunteer for an experiment in which he will insert a microchip into his skin containing, among other information, his credit card.
The official, who is also a Tomsk State University vice rector for innovation, Konstantin Belyakov, will be one of 10 volunteers to have a 4mm by 1.5mm microchip implant sewn into their hands, the state-run TASS news agency reported Sunday.
“It functions as a bank card, an electronic key to access the university buildings and a ‘Troika’ transport card, which is used in Moscow,” the university’s press service was quoted as saying.
The press service did not say when the experiment is scheduled to kick off.
The implant will reportedly be developed by a Moscow region-based chipmaker behind the Troika and the Mir bank cards.
