Six long-range Russian bombers attacked Islamic State positions near Palmyra in Syria on Monday, according to the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry.
The planes took off from Russia and dropped high-explosive bombs in the area of the Es Suhne and Arak settlements, destroying a control point, a large field camp and an underground storage of ammunition, the Interfax news agency reported.
Once the operation was completed, the aircraft returned to the airfield, according to the ministry.
Palmyra was under the control of the Islamic State from May 2015, but was freed in March this year. Russian aircraft continues military operations in the area — strikes targeting the Islamic State's positions east of Palmyra and in the province of Homs were carried out last month.
The Islamic State is a terrorist organization banned in Russia.
