Russia's Yandex Claims Fix for Kremlin GPS Interference

Yandex Maps

Russian web giant Yandex claims to have stopped Kremlin defense technology from interfering with Muscovites' smartphones, the Vedomosti newspaper reported Monday.

Users of GPS locators on smartphones, wearable tech, and car navigation systems had all reported problems while traveling close to the Kremlin in central Moscow over the summer.

For unknown reasons, users' devices would show their location as close to Moscow's Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports.

Experts previously speculated that the problems were caused by special defense technology designed to protect the Kremlin against drones.

Roman Chernin, the head of Yandex's geo-services team, said that the company's apps would now be able to recognize sudden, unexpected changes in GPS location.

After recognizing the jump, the apps would then return users to their previous location, Chernin told Vedomosti.
