A region in Siberia is planning to sue the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for funds spent supporting Russian paralympic athletes, the Championat website reported Monday.
The IPC announced Sunday that Russia is banned from competing in next month’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, following damning reports of a “state-sponsored” doping program throughout Russian sport.
A member of Russia’s Federation Council for social policy, Senator Eduard Isakov announced that the Khanty Mansiisk autonomous region will sue the IPC.
“I’ve given notice to the director of the center for disability sport to prepare a legal challenge against the IPC in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, relating to the violation of the rights of disabled athletes," he said.
Isakov said that the claim for compensation, which is currently being calculated, would relate to the amount wasted preparing paralympic athletes for competition over the last four years.
“It’s no small amount," he said.
