Russian Parliament Member Wants to Put All the Women Deputies in a New Reality TV Show

The head of the State Duma’s committee on family, women, and children has gone public with a bold new suggestion: all the women in the lower house of the Russian parliament should team up and launch a television program. Oksana Pushkina says the reality TV show could be the key to establishing a smooth working relationship between the State Duma’s 70 women deputies, the Interfax news agency reported.

“I want to be girlfriends, and I also want to gather together the women from all the different [party] factions. So I’m offering up this suggestion. And maybe that’s what we could call it: ‘Girlfriends,’” Pushkina said at her Duma committee's first meeting.

Another member of the committee, Tamara Pletneva, immediately seconded the proposal, and a promise was made to develop the concept further.

Oksana Pushkina’s idea doesn’t come out of nowhere. She is a nationally famous television personality, having hosted the show “Female View” (Zhenskii Vzglyad) on NTV for more than a decade. Pushkina was elected to the Duma this September as a member of the ruling United Russia political party. Since last year, she had served as the Moscow region's children's rights commissioner.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
