An inmate who escaped from a Siberian prison last week was apprehended on Wednesday in a village roughly 200 kilometers away. The man broke out of prison to find his eight-year-old daughter, the Interfax news agency reported.
37-year-old Vasily Bech was transferred to a penal colony in the Tomsk region in early September. In 2014, he was convicted of illegal drug trafficking.
On Sept. 23, Bech escaped during a work shift in the prison’s vegetable store. Five days later, police caught him 200 kilometers north in the village of Molchanovo, where he told the officers he was trying to see his daughter, who lives there with her mother.
According to reports, Bech traversed 200 kilometers of forest on foot before he was apprehended. He now faces a four-year extension on his prison sentence, as well as additional fines to cover the cost of the manhunt.
