Russian Education Minister Resigns Month Before Elections

Dmitry Livanov Sergei Porter / Vedomosti

Russian Education Minister Dmitry Livanov has resigned from his post less than a month before the country's parliamentary elections.

President Vladimir Putin has appointed Olga Vasilieva, a former education representative within the presidential administration, to the position. Livanov is to continue his work as the president's special representative on economic relations with Ukraine.

Livanov and of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev have both declined to comment on the matter.

Since becoming education minister in 2012, Livanov had overseen the reform of the Russian Academy of Science and had received criticism for changes made to school leaving exams.

Livanov was also removed from the ruling United Russia’s upper council at the beginning of the year.
