Poll Shows Russians Want Trump to Win U.S. Presidential Election

Donald Trump

The majority of Russian citizens would like to see Donald Trump become the next president of the United States, according to a poll held by the Britain-based research firm YouGov.

20,000 citizens from G20 countries were surveyed and asked their opinions on the upcoming U.S. elections. Thirty-one percent of Russians gave Trump their first preference.

His opponent, Hillary Clinton, gained the support of a mere 10 percent of Russian voters, the poll showed.

In December last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Trump "the leader of the U.S. presidential race" and described him as a "bright and talented man," the RBC news agency reported.

Trump thanked the Russian president, saying that "Putin has been a very strong leader for Russia."

According to the poll, which included other questions on political and economic topics, Russians believe that Putin is the most trustworthy world leader, followed by the Dalai Lama in second place.
