Authorities in the Russian city of St. Petersburg have approved a rally against naming one of the city’s bridges after Chechnya’s first president Akhmad Kadyrov, local news website Fontana.ru reported Thursday.
The rally is to take place on June 6 at the Mars Field (Marsovo Pole) in the center of the city, a deputy from St. Petersburg’s legislative assembly, Maxim Reznik, told journalists.
Another public rally, scheduled for Friday, will be held on Nevsky Prospect — the city’s main street.
“St. Petersburg does not have a street named after Sergei Dovlatov, or a bridge dedicated to Joseph Brodsky, or a Vladimir Nabokov square,” the rally organizers wrote in their appeal. “But when it comes to a name for a bridge, the only name the powers-that-be can recall is Akhmad Kadyrov,” the appeal reads, the Saint-Petersburg.ru news agency reported.
On Monday, the St. Petersburg toponymic commission agreed on proposals to name a bridge after Chechnya's first president Akhmad Kadyrov.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
