Moscow’s Winter 2016 Snowiest on Record

Fyodor Savintsev / TASS

Snow came to Moscow this winter earlier than it has in the previous 137 years, the Meteonovosti weather portal has reported.

Snow first fell on Moscow on Oct. 27 this year, the earliest recorded date since weather observations began.

Earlier in November, severe weather conditions knocked out electricity supplies to homes of almost 24,000 people living near Moscow, the Tass news agency reported.

Train routes between major cities were suspended, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. The outages impacted 19 “socially significant facilities” including hospitals and schools.

Over 70 flights were cancelled in November due to excessive snow, leaving many stranded in the city.

As of Dec. 2, Meteonovosti recorded 90cm of snowfall in Moscow, a record for the city.
