Moscow Police Detain 19 Vegans at May Day Parade
Moscow police detained 19 leftist and vegan activists during Monday’s May Day parade.
Vladimir Zhuravlev, a member of the “Leftist Bloc,” told the website Mediazona, that the group of vegan activists was reportedly detained for displaying a gay pride flag.
Police later released everyone without pressing charges.
Translation: “The detained vegans — a whopping 19 of them, including four minors still being held.”
Correction: An earlier version of this story contained a photograph from St. Petersburg showing a vegan banner reading, “Animals aren't food.” This photograph was not from this week's May Day parade in Moscow. The Moscow Times apologizes for the mistake.
