Iran Receives S-300 Defense System Missiles From Russia

Moscow has delivered the missile component of the S-300 defense system to Tehran, Reuters reported Monday, citing Iranian news agency Tasnim.

The delivery contract, worth $800 million, was signed in 2007, but was frozen by Russia in 2010 because of the international sanctions imposed on Iran. Moscow unfroze it in April 2015, following last year's agreement to lift the sanctions on Tehran.

The controversial contract is vocally opposed by the United States and Israel, who fear the missiles could be used to protect Iranian nuclear sites from air strikes.
