A suspect has been detained at a church in Russia’s Mordovia region, Interfax reported Monday, citing a law enforcement source.

Local media reported that the man had broken into the church on Sunday night with a rifle after following boar tracks during a hunt. He was reportedly intoxicated and began shooting for an unidentified reason, after which local residents called the police.

While being detained, the suspect stabbed a policeman with a pointed church relic, Interfax reported. The officer was hospitalized in stable condition and a criminal case is being opened into the incident, Interfax said.
