Former Mayor of Russia's Petrozavodsk Appeals Dismissal

Galina Shirshina

Galina Shirshina, former mayor of Petrozavodsk, the capital of Russia's republic of Karelia, has appealed a ruling made by the Karelian Supreme Court. The court ruled on Jan. 21 that Shirshina's recent dismissal from her post was legitimate, the Meduza news portal reported Monday.

Galina Shirshina was dismissed from her position by the town council in December 2015. She had held the post of Petrozavodsk mayor since 2013 and had regular clashes with local deputies, Meduza reported.

"I sent an appeal to the Supreme Court on Friday," Shirshina told the Interfax news agency. "We are going to prove that the arguments [heard by the court in January] are not enough to conclude that I neglected my duty as mayor."
