Dmitry Novikov, first deputy chairman of the Russian State Duma's committee on international affairs, expressed hope that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump might be less aggressive towards Russia.

On Monday President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Trump, during which they discussed the future of U.S.-Russian relations, according to the Kremlin's press service. Novikov said the conversation was a sign that Trump, at least prior to his upcoming inauguration, remains true to his earlier statements on foreign policy during the election.

"And that, of course, is very important; this creates the hope that some points of the current U.S. policy will be revised, the degree of aggressiveness will be reduced, and there will be more elements for constructive dialogue," Novikov said.
