Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) claims to have uncovered an upcoming cyber-attack on Russia's financial system from abroad.
"The Russian Federal Security Service received information on foreign intelligence services preparing large-scale cyber attacks starting from Dec. 5 in order to destabilize the financial system of the Russian Federation, including the activities of a number of major Russian banks," the FSB said in a statement published on its official website on Friday.
According to the statement, the alleged attack plans have been traced to a Ukrainian hosting company in The Netherlands called BlazingFast.
The FSB claims the hackers planned to send out mass SMS and social media messages about bankruptcies, the liquidation of businesses, and the revocation of banking licenses of major Russian banks. According to the FSB, the attacks were aimed at several major Russian cities.
The statement also claims that the FSB has taken measures to ensure Russia's information and economic security, as well as document the alleged attacks.
