Radio Journalist Stabbed Outside Apartment Building

Aslanyan Radio Mayak

A journalist for Mayak radio was clinging to life Tuesday after being stabbed outside his apartment building by an unknown attacker.

Sergei Aslanyan, who also worked for Ekho Moskvy radio for 10 years, received a call on his mobile phone late Monday from someone who asked to meet him on the street outside his apartment building in south Moscow, a police spokesperson told Interfax.

When Aslanyan walked out of his building, he?  was struck over the head with a heavy object and stabbed in the chest, neck and arm.

Aslanyan underwent immediate surgery and was listed in stable condition early Tuesday, a source at the Sklifosovsky clinic, where the journalist was taken, told Interfax.

Aslanyan had received threats after making comments about the prophet Muhammad earlier this month on a program on Mayak radio, Ekho Moskvy reported.

An appeal was filed with the Prosecutor General's Office requesting that Aslanyan be investigated for inciting ethnic hatred.
