Seven Russian swimmers will not be able to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics due to their involvement in doping, according to an online statement posted Monday by the International Federation of Swimming (FINA).
Four athletes, previously sanctioned for doping — Mikhail Dovgalyuk, Yulia Yefimova, Natalya Lovtsova and Anastasia Krapivina — were withdrawn from the competition by the Russian Olympic Committee. Another three — Nikita Lobintsev, Vladimir Morozov and Darya Ustinova — were deemed ineligible for participation in the Games by FINA because their names appeared in the latest WADA report.
The International Olympics Committee announced on Sunday that it would not impose a blanket ban on Russia’s Olympic team from competition at this year’s Games, leaving the fate of the country’s athletes up to international sports federations.
It did, however, rule that no athlete with history of doping — even those who have already served their suspensions — is eligible to participate.
