1 Million Russians Forbidden From Leaving the Country

Maxim Stulov / Vedomosti

Russia's Federal Bailiff Service has banned over one million Russian citizens from traveling abroad for failing to pay their debts.

"In total, the bailiffs issued 1.6 million decisions to restrict debtors from leaving the Russian Federation, which is 50.3 precent more than last year," said Artur Parfenchikov, head of Russia's Federal Bailiff Service.

Parfenchikov called travel bans "an effective incentive for repaying one's debts."

At the same time, 25,000 foreign citizens and stateless individuals were forcibly deported from Russia following administrative court decisions.
