While the same precautions you’d take anywhere apply in Russia, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other host cities are friendlier than most. Unless you’re drunkenly causing trouble or starting fights (we recommend not doing this) late-night wanderers can walk quite safely on Moscow’s streets. Female travelers are unlikely to experience the same level of cat-calling or street harassment frequently encountered in cities like New York or Rome, though we can’t speak for the hordes of tourists who may not demonstrate the same Russian aversion to public pickups. Of course, there are always exceptions and we recommend staying on the side of caution, keeping your belongings safe and staying on well-lit streets.
