Prostitution has been outlawed in Russia since 1917, but this certainly doesn’t mean that the practice doesn’t exist. According to official statistics, there are almost 1 million female and male sex workers in Russia. Unofficial statistics put the number at 3 million. There are calls to legalize prostitution in Russia, but they are consistently opposed by conservative government members, so for now sex workers are given various fines and sometimes arrested. There are no fines for their clients.
