Be careful with exchanging money with unofficial local vendors: there is a risk of being handed counterfeit notes or being charged a “commission fee,” which could be inconspicuously advertised somewhere in the shop in Cyrillic. You’re safest changing money at bank branches or withdrawing cash from ATMs, which can be found pretty much everywhere in large cities. The largest banks in Russia are Sberbank, VTB, Gazprombank and Rosselkhozbank. Tip from a local: 5,000-ruble bills can be difficult to break for some vendors. The 1,000 and 500-ruble bills (and the new 200-ruble and 2,000-ruble bills) are more common payment methods.
