Fridays at the Pushkin Museum

After hours at the museum

On the hunt for an alternative Friday night activity? You're in luck. The new season of “Fridays at the Pushkin" began earlier this month. Through the end of December the museum will stay up past its bedtime every Friday and put on an array of concerts, curatorial tours and discussions for Muscovites to enjoy. You’ll get the most out of the tours if your Russian is pretty good but everyone can appreciate music from selected soloists of the Bolshoi Theater, Yury Bashmet’s “New Russia” ensemble and students from the Moscow Conservatory. Tickets provide you access to most of the exhibitions and the concert or guided tour. See the website for a full schedule.

Usachevsky Market

Shop, feast, be happy

Usachevsky Market, situated a short walk from Sportivnaya metro station, has had a face-lift. The market originally opened in 1937 and has had several rebirths, the most recent bringing the market firmly into the 21st century. Three months of renovation work have resulted in a light, airy space packed with bustling stalls and food products from the Moscow region and beyond. Sample Russian parmesan or pick up a haul of dried apricots before heading to the back of the market where a new and improved food court has opened. Crab ’n’ Caviar, Mitzva bar and Baton are just some of the new eateries where you can take a pit-stop once you’re tired of wandering the aisles.

The ensemble themselves have achieved critical acclaim throughout their native country and Europe and are well-regarded on the international period performance scene. The performance takes place at the Catholic Cathedral on Malaya Gruzinskaya Ulitsa — tickets from 700 rubles.

No Access for Adults. A Real Plane for Children.

Take your kids on an adventure

“No Access for Adults. A Real Plane for Children” is a gravity-defying exhibition based at the Yak-42 plane. Situated near the Polytechnic Museum in Gorky park, the plane and the current exhibition are part of a series of exhibits entitled “Take-off." Anna Kozlova, the artist and creator of “No Access,”  was inspired by children's interest in whatever they see on the floor and used the Yak 42’s floor as the main exhibition space. Her installation is devoted to the natural wonders of Russia and kids will be able to see amazing landscapes from the plane’s illuminators. There’s also a secret treasure map which will help them find various hidden objects at the exhibition.
