Russian Court Accepts Lawsuit Demanding Putin's Impeachment

A court in the Saratov region has accepted a lawsuit filed by local resident Nikolai Suvorov which calls for the removal of Russian President Vladimir Putin from his post, the local FreeNews-Volga news agency reported Thursday.

Suvorov said in a letter to the court that Putin is “an enemy of the state … for his plunder of Russia and impoverishment of the Russian people.”

The preliminary hearing is set to start on April 28. Putin or his representative must make a statement on these allegations before April 25. Local residents had attempted to file a similar lawsuit against the president in March but it was not accepted by the court.

Numerous Moscow courts have in recent months rejected repeated lawsuits filed by opposition leader Alexei Navalny accusing the president of corruption.
