Russia to Send Aid Package to Sandy Victims

The Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday that it will send two Ilyushin-76 cargo planes to New York carrying 50 tons of humanitarian aid to Americans feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

The two planes will depart for New York from Moscow's Ramenskoye air field, according to a statement posted on the ministry's website. The statement did not specify what sort of aid the planes will be carrying or exactly when they would leave.

Russia has already flown construction materials to Cuba, which also suffered as a result of the devastating superstorm, which killed roughly 120 people.

Michael McFaul, the U.S ambassador to Russia, expressed his gratitude for the aid package to help American citizens via social-networking site Twitter.

"Thanks for the help Russia," McFaul wrote on Twitter.
