Female punk rock group Pussy Riot, whose imprisonment on hooliganism charges in 2012 propelled its members to fame, released its first English single on Wednesday.
The group's new song, called "I Can't Breathe," addresses police brutality. The title corresponds to the last words of Eric Garner, an unarmed African-American man who was choked to death by a New York police officer who suspected him of illegally selling cigarettes.
In their music video, group members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina are shown being buried alive while they wear the uniforms of Russia's OMON riot police.
Members of Pussy Riot were convicted of hooliganism after performing a "punk prayer" in Moscow's Christ the Savior Church in Feb. 2012, a stunt meant to denounce the collusion between the Russian government and the Orthodox Church. Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were amnestied and released from prison in Dec. 2013, after having spent nearly two years behind bars.
