New East Photo Prize Opens to Photographers in Russia

The Calvert Journal has launched the New East Photo Prize and is now accepting submissions from photographers based in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Central Asia and Russia. A London-based guide to the contemporary culture of Eastern Europe and the countries of the former Soviet Union, The Calvert Journal aims to enrich and support creativity in these regions.

The goal of the project is to broaden perceptions of the cultural landscape of Eastern Europe through the medium of photography.

“Although hugely diverse, the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are often represented in an outdated manner which negates the rich culture and variety of creative output from these nations,” said The Calvert Journal in a statement on their website.

Entrants can submit up to 15 images to the jury, with series judged as a whole. The winner will have the opportunity to publish their works as a photo book while all shortlisted entrants will be exhibited in London for a period of two months.

Judges for the competition include Kate Bush, head of photography at Media Space, professional photographer Donald Weber, Roger Tooth, head of photography at the Guardian and the Observer and Taus Makhacheva, winner of the 6th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art Foundation Prize.
