Anzhi Stadium Unveiled in Dagestan

A football stadium considered one of the largest in Europe and founded by Forbes billionaire Salavat Karimov was unveiled in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, on Saturday.

The Anzhi stadium was built for the team of the same name. Karimov, whose wealth is estimated at $7.1 billion, owns the Anzhi football club.

The stadium opening was marked by a show featuring American pop singer Cher and the '80s action star Jean Claude Van Damme, Rossia 1 reported Saturday.

The stadium, which can accommodate up to 30,000 fans, cost 34 billion rubles to build and can host top football class championships in the North Caucasus republic.

Its construction was controversial in the republic, one of the poorest in the country. While the Euro Cup championship will take place in Russia in 2018, Dagestan is not among the cities that will host the games.
