342 years ago today, on April 24, 1671, the legendary Don Cossack leader of the Peasants' War, Stepan Razin, was captured by royal authorities. Razin led an uprising against the Russian government in southern Russia and, when the government tried to punish him, he gained more public support. In the spring of 1670, Razin organized a new peasant rebellion and was able to take several fortresses. But on April 24 Razin was finally captured in the town of Kagalinitsky and publicly executed soon after in Moscow.
