Russian Defense Exports Rise to $6.5Bln in First Half of 2013

The state arms export agency Rosoboronexport has been expanding its presence on world markets, increasing its sales in the first half of 2013 to $6.5 billion, state technology corporation Rostec reported in a statement Thursday, Interfax reported.

"While Rosoboronexport's sales were slightly over $5 billion in 2003, they reached a record of $12.9 billion in 2012. Rosoboronexport is determined to increase the sales in 2013. In the first six months alone, the exports amounted to $.6.5 billion," it said.

The company's contract portfolio now exceeds $35 billion, and further contracts worth $20 billion are being considered by foreign customers, it said.

Rosoboronexport accounts for more than 80 percent of Russian exports of weapons and military hardware. It ships its products to about 70 countries and cooperates with more than 700 Russian defense industry companies.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
