Opposition leaders filed a request with Moscow City Hall on Monday to stage an anti-Kremlin rally on May 6 on Bolotnaya Ploshchad, the same date and location where a demonstration last year ended in violence.
The organizers want to march from Kaluzhskaya Ploshchad to Bolotnaya Ploshchad and then hold a rally there, according to a statement posted on the Twitter account of Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov.
Alexei Mayorov, the head of security for City Hall, said a decision on the application would be made within three days, Interfax reported.
The May 6, 2012, rally was held on the eve of Vladimir Putin's inauguration to a third term as president;. The resulting violence followed by days of peaceful protests have been credited as an impetus for a subsequent Kremlin crackdown on protests and the opposition.
