One-Third of Russians Want a Female President

Sergei Nikolayev / Vedomosti

Seventy-seven percent of Russians have expressed their support for more female involvement in politics, a survey by the independent Levada Center pollster revealed, the Interfax news agency reported Friday.

Half of male respondents and 86 percent of female respondents agreed that the highest governmental posts should be shared equally between men and women.

According to the poll, the majority of Russians (64 percent) believe that both genders should enjoy equal rights and freedoms, with 30 percent of respondents saying they are against this.

About one-third of Russians (32 percent) would like to see a female president in the next 10-15 years.

Nearly half of respondents would not vote for a female president, the poll showed.

Fifty-one percent of Russians believe that men have more chances advance their careers, and 41 percent think that women have approximately the same opportunities.

The survey questioned 800 respondents in 48 Russian regions.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
