Kidnappers Grab Wrong Man at Volgograd Hospital

A Volgograd resident abducted from a hospital ward by a group of men was released after the kidnappers apparently realized that they had snatched the wrong man, investigators said.

The unidentified patient was admitted to a hospital in Volgograd on Monday evening after getting shot in the face with a non-lethal weapon.

The following day, a group of unidentified men arrived at the hospital in three cars without license plates. They entered his ward, knocked the patient unconscious, dragged him out of the hospital and fled, investigators said.

"The man was later found alive at his father's house. He told investigators that he was abducted by unidentified individuals, who … released him after a brief talk. The man believes that his kidnappers made a mistake," the local branch of the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear whether the man chose to continue his hospital treatment or decided to stay at home.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
