The Galiasgar Kamal Tatar State Academic Theater's new building opened in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s central republic of Tatarstan, on Monday.
The Kamal Theater's origin dates back to Dec. 22, 1906, when the first Tatar-language performance was held. However, the movement to establish a Tatar theater dates back to the late 19th century. In 1887, Gabdrakhman Ilyasi wrote the first Tatar-language play, after which many more works were written and translated into the language.
Wowhaus Bureau and Kengo Kuma & Associates designed the new building after winning an international competition for the job in 2022. The firm's “Soaring Sails” design incorporates elements of nature, Kazan, and Tatar national symbols.
