Runners took part in one of the coldest marathons in the world, held at minus 50 degrees Celsius (minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit), in Russia’s republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

The two-day “Pole of Cold — Oymyakon” marathon was held over the weekend in Oymyakon, a village known as the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth.

The event attracted 50 local athletes and participants from 13 districts in Sakha and 16 other regions of Russia. They ran distances of 5, 10, 15, 21.1, 42.2 and 50 kilometers (3.1, 6.2, 9.3, 13.1, 26.2 and 31 miles).

Alexander Moyedo won the 50-kilometer race, finishing in 3:42:24.

The marathon was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, with many participants carrying portraits of their veteran relatives.

Some of the funds raised from the marathon will be used to support soldiers participating in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
