Stanislav Cherchesov has been appointed as the man to lead Russia’s football team into the 2018 Russia World Cup. Russia’s Football Union announced the appointment in a statement on Twitter on Thursday, setting Cherchesov the task of reaching the semi-final of the competition.
Cherchesov however, said that he would take the team to the final.
The 52-year-old Cherchesov will sign a deal worth 2 million euros ($2.2 million) a year, which will last until the end of 2018, the Match TV channel reported.
A former international player with both the Soviet and Russian teams, Cherchesov has managed some of Russia’s biggest teams and recently experienced success with Polish team Legia Warsaw.
Cherchesov takes over a team at a very low ebb. Previous manager Leonid Slutsky resigned after the team exited June’s European Championship without winning a match. A petition to reform Russia’s national team with completely new players subsequently gathered almost one million signatures.
