In Photos: Northern Lights Illuminate Skys Across Russia

A powerful solar storm produced a stunning overnight display of the northern lights across much of Russia on Thursday.

Images capturing the vibrant scarlet and green auroras were shared online from the western Pskov region to the Siberian republic of Buryatia near the border with Mongolia.

Russia’s Phobos weather center said the magnetic storms were strong enough for the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, to be visible as far south as the Voronezh region.

The Russian Academy of Sciences’ solar astronomy laboratory registered northern lights over the skies of Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as central Russia and northern Siberia.
