The Moscow Times Calls for Evan Gershkovich to Be Freed

Evan Gershkovich. EPA / TASS

Our former colleague, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, has been sentenced to 16 years in a high-security Russian prison for espionage following a sham trial in which no evidence was ever made public.

He, his employer and the U.S. government have categorically denied the charges against him.

Evan, a 32-year-old U.S. citizen, worked for The Moscow Times in Russia for three years. He is not a spy. He is a journalist who has been unjustly imprisoned for doing his job.

Instead of spending the past 15 months in Moscow’s Lefortovo Prison, he should have been doing what he loves most — reporting on Russia.

We stand with Evan and join his employer, his family and friends in calling on the U.S. government to secure his release as soon as possible.

The views expressed in opinion pieces do not necessarily reflect the position of The Moscow Times.

… we have a small favor to ask. As you may have heard, The Moscow Times, an independent news source for over 30 years, has been unjustly branded as a "foreign agent" by the Russian government. This blatant attempt to silence our voice is a direct assault on the integrity of journalism and the values we hold dear.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. Our commitment to providing accurate and unbiased reporting on Russia remains unshaken. But we need your help to continue our critical mission.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and you can be confident that you're making a significant impact every month by supporting open, independent journalism. Thank you.
