In Photos: Ukraine Evacuates Civilians, Animals from Devastating Flooding in Kherson

Thousands of people in southern Ukraine have been forced to flee their homes after the Kakhovka dam — a critical dam holding back a massive reservoir on the Dnipro River — was destroyed early Tuesday.

In the hours since, the fast-rising waters have prompted emergency rescue efforts in the partially occupied Kherson region, with fears of a humanitarian and ecological disaster showing no sign of abating.

Ukraine and Russia have traded blame for the dam's destruction 15 months into Moscow's full-scale invasion of its neighbor.

Ukraine's deputy prosecutor-general has said some 40,000 people will need to be evacuated on both sides of the river.
