Mikhail Gorbachev, who died Tuesday, was one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century.
Credited for playing a key role in bringing an end to the Cold War, he was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1990 for his accomplishments in international relations.
In particular, he negotiated a series of historic nuclear arms control agreements with then U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
Soviet relations with Europe also improved markedly during Gorbachev’s rule.
