U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said that Russia is putting constant pressure on U.S. allies in Europe, the state-run TASS news agency reported Friday.
Speaking at a pre-election debate with fellow Democratic Party candidate Bernie Sanders, Clinton also accused Moscow of “attempting to pit European countries against each other to gain territory.”
The two were asked to comment on a speech given by Secretary of Defense Ash Carter earlier this week in which he named Russia as the main threat to U.S. national security.
“The Secretary of Defense considers the constant pressure which Russia is applying to our European allies as an attempt to alter the borders of Europe,” Clinton said.
Clinton said the U.S. must “do more to support NATO countries,” adding that the U.S. must send a signal to Russia that the U.S. will respond to such behavior.
However, she did not comment on whether Russia is the main threat to national security.
