TripAdvisor Ranks Hermitage Museum World's 6th Best

The city of St. Petersburg also featured as the website's 17th best world destination in 2015.

American travel website TripAdvisor has named St. Petersburg's State Hermitage Museum the sixth best in the world, according to its "Travelers' Choice" ratings-based guide released on Wednesday.

“All the world's beauty in one museum. It lets your mind travel to all the places you always wanted to go,” the website said in its description of the museum, apparently citing a user comment.

The list was topped by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, followed by the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago. In fourth and fifth place were Madrid's Museo Nacional del Prado and the Musee du Louvre in Paris.

Founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, the Hermitage is the biggest museum in Russia and one of the biggest in the world with only a fraction of its collection of more than 3 million items on display.

The Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood, one of St. Petersburg's landmark cathedrals, came in 12th on TripAdvisor's list of the best landmarks in the world.

The city of St. Petersburg also featured as the website's 17th best world destination in 2015. The No. 1 pick was the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
