Russian Mum of Three Crowned 'Mrs. World' at Beauty Pageant

Yulia Ionina has been crowned the winner of "Mrs. World."

A 28-year-old mother of three from St. Petersburg has been crowned the winner of "Mrs. World," an international beauty pageant for married women that took place in Ecuador this year, Russian media reported.

Yulia Ionina, a businesswoman who also runs a charity, said after winning the contest on Saturday that the victory was a "big accomplishment for myself and, in general, for participants from Russia," state news agency ITAR-Tass reported.

Ionina said that tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine crisis did not cast a shadow over the contest and that the reception she got from other contestants and organizers was "better than good."

"There were no negative feelings," Ionina, who is also working on her second college degree in law, told the news agency. Russian women previously won the pageant in 2006 and 2009, according to its website.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
