Police in Krasnodar have identified the man who fired an automatic weapon from his apartment window on New Year’s, as the city’s fireworks exploded overhead.

The incident gained attention after footage of the gunfire was shared on YouTube. Eyewitnesses also report that parked cars below the man’s window were littered with spent 5.45-millimeter casings — ammunition designed for the AK-74 assault rifle.

This Tuesday, local police told the Kuban 24 television network that the man was firing blanks from a decommissioned rifle. Law-enforcement officers have reportedly seized the weapon and the owner’s additional ammo. An investigation is underway to determine if any laws were broken.
