Hollywood star and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has recorded a video message in support of anti-government protesters in Ukraine, wishing them luck and making a peace sign.
"I want to send a message to the people of the Ukraine to let them know that I wish them all the best of luck in their peaceful struggle for democracy and freedom," the Terminator star said in a 10-second-long video released on Friday.
"Peace!" he added at the end of the video, raising a V-sign.
The video appeared on a YouTube page run by Ukraine's Vitali Klitschko — a boxing champion turned opposition leader — and his brother Wladimir, also a champion boxer.
Protests in Ukraine, sparked by the government's decision to back away from a trade deal with the EU, are spreading throughout the country, with municipal buildings in 10 cities falling to activists over the last few days.
Protesters on Sunday seized the Justice Ministry building and set up a barricade. Justice Minister Olena Lukash said she would call for a state of emergency if the building's new occupants refuse to leave.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
Remind me later.
