Russian Dies Saving Daughter in Thailand

A Russian woman died in a road accident in Thailand trying to save her 1 1/2-year-old baby, Interfax reported Monday.

Thai authorities and Russian diplomats are preparing to bring home the body of 30-year-old Olga Kolchanova, a resident of the far eastern island of Sakhalin, who was killed by a truck in the accident, the report said.

The accident took place last Saturday in Pattaya, where Kolchanova was on vacation with her husband and daughter. The family made a roadside stop to buy fruit, when the little girl ran out onto the road.

By the time Kolchanova realized that the girl was stranded on the road she saw a truck approaching her daughter. She pushed her daughter from under the truck's wheels at the last moment but was hit herself and died.

A local travel agency that sold the tour to Kolchanova and her daughter told Interfax that the 1 1/2-year-old girl suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital, the report said.

The victim's mother flew to Thailand on Sunday, the report added.

"The question of bringing home the woman's body is being resolved. The girl is currently in a hospital, she is expected to be released in a week," a source told the news agency.
