Moscow University Professor Stabs Self to Death

A professor of history and political science from the Moscow University for the Humanities stabbed himself to death at his home in the northeast of Moscow.

Police believe that the professor stabbed himself in the chest with a dagger that was given to him as a gift, a police spokesperson told RIA-Novosti on Wednesday.

His wife reported finding him Tuesday morning with two wounds in the area of his heart, Interfax reported, citing a source in law enforcement.

"The door to the apartment was locked from the inside, so it is likely that the professor stabbed himself twice in the chest with the dagger. It was discovered on the bedside table next to his body," the source said.

His wife told police her husband had been depressed lately and on the eve of the incident had returned home from the university very upset.

The professor, Vladimir Krivoruchenko, was 82 years old.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
